Day 1 - Equities

Baillie Gifford US Growth Trust

We backed Gary Robinson and his experienced team at Baillie Gifford at the initial public offering of the Baillie Gifford US Growth trust, given their long-term focus on investment into growth assets, with a genuinely active approach. The trust was launched to allow the team to access an element of less liquid, unquoted investments and has performed exceptionally well thus far.

VS

Miton European Opportunities Fund

The Miton European Opportunities fund is a mid cap-focused equity fund run by Thomas Brown and Carlos Moreno. The fund was launched in December 2015 and stock ideas are generated using local brokers in Europe to get excellent access to companies, from screens and/or from conferences. The fund has very low turnover and its make-up looks considerably different from the benchmark.

Overall Winner: Baillie Gifford US Growth Trust

Day 1 -  Equities

Findlay Park

These guys have enough nous and experience to defend when they need to, but aren’t afraid to be bold and embrace new technology. They are currently managing to keep pace with a surging market and with 13% in cash on-the-side are well placed to take advantage of any weakness.

VS

Artemis Income Fund

UK equities are very much a hated asset class at the moment and the Artemis team are the right team for the job. We don’t expect the going to be easy, but do expect Adrian Frost and team to continue delivering the alpha – the ‘Postmen’ of the equity space akin to Team Europe’s Ian Poulter.

Overall Winner: Artemis Income Fund

Day 2 - Fixed Income

iShares $ Treasury Bond 1-3 years ETF

Mattioli Woods has recently introduced US Treasuries into its portfolios, given the attractive yields on offer relative to UK Gilts. The iShares $ Treasury Bond 1-3 years ETF yields over 2.5% at present and has a duration of 1.56 years. Hedging the currency is not currently an option, given the cost of doing so.

VS

Funding Circle SME Income Trust

The Funding Circle SME Income trust effectively lends money to small and medium sized companies which must have a 10-year trading history, with the average loan size being £68,000 and a 27-month average maturity. The trust has 65% exposure to UK, 25% in the US and 7% to Europe, and while it trades on a premium, it has an attractive yield of circa 6.3%.

Overall winner: iShares $ Treasury Bonds

Day 2 - Fixed Income

Gemcap Semper Total Return Fund

Not so well-known on this side of the pond, but comes with a proven pedigree on US soil and will continue to benefit from a strong economy. Very good under pressure and will hold up well should conditions tighten.

VS

TwentyFour Asset Backed Income Fund

Rock solid performers who we expect to perform well in a tricky environment. Very much at home on European soil and have benefited from the tailwind of a supportive central bank. Proven strategy and we expect these guys to perform well should rates rise.

Overall Winner: Gemcap Semper Total Return Fund

Day 3 - Alternative Investment

Artemis US Extended Alpha

Artemis US Extended Alpha is a Ucits ‘150/50’ fund. Designed to outperform the S&P 500 index, it combines a traditional long portfolio of US stocks with a portfolio of short positions. Clearly, this fund’s long/short structure allows the manager to use his stock-picking skills to profit from falling, as well as rising, share prices.

VS

HG Capital Trust

An area we have benefited from and continue to like has been private equity. While we invest in a number of these, the strongest returns have come from HG Capital trust which invests in unquoted businesses, predominantly in Europe and UK, which have a focus on technology and have enterprise values of £30 million and above.

Overall winner - Artemis US Extended Alpha

Day 3 - Alternative Investment

Neuberger Berman US PutWrite

By no means a flashy fund, but one we’d expect to do well should times get tough – perhaps the Webb Simpson of the US line-up. Expect this fund to do well, should the more higher – arguably over-rated – names within the US market come under scrutiny.

VS

Jupiter Absolute Return Equity Fund

James Clunie’s bias towards unloved UK stocks is a style that’s out of favour, but we’re of the view that form is temporary and class is permanent. We expect this fund to come through with good numbers should the regime change and we see a change in fortune for the glamourous US names.

Overall Winner - Jupiter Absolute Return Equity Fund

Winners

Scott Wylie Total Score:

US: 3 EU: 0

Who’s going to win the actual Ryder Cup?

It’s got to be Europe, with my star player of the team to be Rory McIlroy.

Rory McPherson Total Score:

US: 1.5 EU: 1.5

Who’s going to win the actual Ryder Cup?

I’m going to go hedge my bets and go with Europe to edge a tight contest and Patrick Reed to scoop up the most points – to a chorus of boos…
