Pub Club Special: On the Road Christmas Jumper Lunch 2018

Pub Club Special: On the Road Christmas Jumper Lunch 2018

Last week, Christmas came early for us here at Citywire! However, it was not the classic turkey and Brussels sprouts Christmas dinner you would expect.

Full of the Christmas spirit at The Black Dog in Vauxhall, we decided to go a bit rogue and order anything but the classic meal – saving ourselves for Christmas day.

The On The Road team were joined by Carrington Investments’ Mohsin Bukhari, PortfolioMetrix’s Nic Spicer, Alpha Portfolio Management’s Andrew Morris, Quilter Cheviot’s David Miller and TAM’s James Penny. Yule have seen their smiling faces in previous issues of the magazine.

As keen quizmasters, we decided to make this year’s quiz the hardest one to date, with the winner getting only seven out of 15 correct answers – congratulations, Bukhari, you sleighed them all! Your prize (as ever) is a full belly and cracking conversation.

Worst Christmas cracker joke:

Penny: Who hides in a bakery at Christmas? A mince spy.

Spicer: What Christmas carol did the wise man lost in the desert sing? No-well, no-well. No-well, no-well!

Best Christmas jumper:

Although competition was tough, with dinosaurs and polar bears and light up jumpers, this year’s winner is one for all you Star Wars fans out there… Andrew Morris.

What is your favourite Christmas tradition?

Bukhari: This will sound ridiculous, but to escape from the ensuing family drama, we usually head out to the M25 services for a coffee at Starbucks since that is one of the only coffee shops open on Christmas day!

Spicer: Christmas braai (a bbq). Admittedly these work a lot better when celebrating Christmas in South Africa than the UK…

Penny: Drinking the whiskey children leave for Santa.

Which fund is your dependable donkey?

Spicer: Liontrust Special Situations (although I’d describe it as more of a reliable Rudolph than dependable donkey).

Morris: LXI Reit. Definitely not a donkey, but has delivered for clients this year.

Penny: JP Morgan UK Equity core.

Bukhari: Hard to say, let’s go with Church House Tenax Absolute Return.

Who are your wise men/women of the year?

Bukhari: Michelle Obama. Can’t think of any men at the moment.

Morris: A close call between Danny Dyer and Harry Redknapp. On balance, Harry a star down under.

What have you put in your clients’ stockings this Christmas?

Penny: Gold bullion!

Bukhari: A printed copy of our latest Carrington Club magazine.

A star is born: your predictions for the next rising star fund manager:

Bukhari: Not exactly rising (they have been around for about 10 years), Oliver Kelton at Odey and Stephen Moore at Artemis.

Morris: Henry Dixon of Man GLG. Not really a rising star, more of a valued ‘present’ for Christmas.

A juicy orange and a fat lump of coal: what are your investment highlights and lowlights from the year?

Penny: Highlight would be potentially – US mid-caps pre Q4 (amusing that a highlight of 2018 is an asset class rallying just 10%, indicative of how we are in a low return environment). Lowlight – European equities.

Spicer: Lowlight: Not being overweight tech in the first three quarters of 2018. Highlight: Not being overweight tech in this last quarter of 2018.

Morris: Astra Zeneca bucking the FTSE trend. Brexit an ongoing lowlight.

Best Christmas present you’ve ever received?

Spicer: For sheer communal comedy value, a 10p plastic banana hanger from Botswana. Don’t have the foggiest idea what a banana hanger is? Well, neither did I…

Penny: I received a giant five foot teddy bear when I was eight, sadly presents have really gone downhill from there.

We’ll be on the road again in 2019 ― get in touch if you’d like us to come and see you!
