Pub Club Special: On the Road Christmas Jumper Lunch 2017

Pub Club Special: On the Road Christmas Jumper Lunch 2017

So this is Christmas, and what have you done? Most likely overdosed on mince pies but not got round to doing your Christmas shopping yet? Us too.

After hosting our annual Christmas jumper lunch in ‘meeting room number six’, more widely known as The Black Dog pub, we are well into the festive spirit. The On the Road team were joined by Hawksmoor Investment Management’s Max Weatherby, Raymond James’ Veronique Morel, Heptagon Capital’s Arnaud Gandon and Lloyds Wealth Investment Office’s Jon Wingent.

A cracking good time was had by all – especially Libby and Weatherby who reigned victorious in the Christmas quiz and Gandon who was flagged down by fellow merry-makers in the pub to compliment his Christmas jumper.

Worst Christmas cracker joke:

Q - What does Santa get if he gets stuck in a chimney?

A - Claustrophobia!

Best Christmas jumper: Arnaud Gandon

What is your favourite Christmas tradition?

Jon Wingent: A post turkey slumber on the sofa during the Queen’s speech.

Veronique Morel: At Christmas in France, we start celebrating earlier than the UK with a very fancy dinner, the ‘reveillon’, in the evening of the 24th December, then you carefully place your polished shoes under the tree in the hope that you will wake up in the morning and see a huge line up of Christmas presents behind your shoes!

Which fund is your dependable donkey?

Arnaud Gandon: I like 24 Dynamic Bond.

JW: Fundsmith Equity.

Who are your wise men/women of the year?

AG: Yngve Slyngstad CEO of Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund (the largest SWF globally) for announcing divestment from Oil & Gas equities, Gina Miller and Ed Sheeran – whether you like it or not the Shape of You has been played 1.4 billion times on Spotify.

Max Weatherby: Common sense was in short supply. Plenty of shepherds chasing sheep but an absence of leaders. Managers who deserve a crown for following the star include Heather Manners at Prusik Asia and Tim Stevenson on Eurotrust.

What have you put in your clients’ stockings this Christmas?

MW: We have increased protection with selective autocalls and absolute return strategies.

VM: Well, the markets are not showing any sign of weakness, so the stocking fillers could be some large stocks such as Netflix, Amazon, maybe some global data products and why not a sprinkle of Bitcoin trackers.

A star is born: your predictions for the next rising star fund manager:

AG: French event driven boutique Syquant: Xavier Morin.

JW: Holly Cassell at Neptune.

Best Christmas present you’ve ever received?

AG: First Walkman (Sony).

MW: As a kid aged seven, my parents gave me a puppy.

A juicy orange and a fat lump of coal: what are your investment highlights and lowlights from the year?

JW: Juicy orange - EM debt. Lump of coal - US equities.

VM: This year was more juicy orange than fat lump of coal despite political events around the world. The good juicy oranges came from emerging markets, Europe, the UK and the US, especially through companies that utilise technology.

Christmas pudding or chocolate yule log?

AG: Chocolate yule log.

JW: Chocolate yule log.

MW: Christmas pudding, gluten free these days.

VM: Christmas pudding with a brandy sauce: it takes time to put together, it needs to mature to get its full effect and the sauce blends it altogether, very similar to a good investment proposal!

We'll be on the road again in 2018 - get in touch if you'd like us to come and see you!
