Parliament to get vote on final Brexit deal

Parliament to get vote on final Brexit deal

Britain's parliament will get a vote on the final Brexit deal before the country leaves the European Union, Brexit secretary David Davis has told MPs.

This is a departure from the government's original position that wanted lawmakers not to have a say in the the UK's exit agreement.

Davis said the House of Commons and the House of Lords will be given the opportunity to propose amendments to the final legislation, which will include any transition deal and agreement on citizen rights.

This means that the terms of the exit will need to become law via new legislation.

Theresa May has been facing internal pressure from several Conservative MPs to amend the EU withdrawal bill to allow the final deal to be passed via primary legislation.

'I can now confirm that once we’ve reached an agreement we will bring forward a specific piece of primary legislation to implement that agreement,' Davis told parliament on Monday.

The news comes as MPs prepare to debate the key Brexit legislation.
