A couple of weeks ago we whizzed up to merry Manchester and popped in to see some of our North West readership writes Eleanor Mahmoud. Having been invited to the CISI’s Careers in Investment Management Day in Manchester (you can read more about that in the magazine), we wanted to make the most of our flying visit to the city.
Favourite meal on the road: Burritos
Number of coffees: Single figures!
Miles travelled: 400
We spent the afternoon catching up with Bill Thomson, head of office at Brewin Dolphin, John Goodall, WH Ireland’s manager of private client research and Karan Sejpal, UBS Wealth Management’s North West & Yorkshire regional head.
Each of them was hugely positive on the city as both a financial hub and as a pool for sourcing talent. We asked them about life in Manchester and opportunities for the year ahead – here’s what they had to say:
What’s your favourite part about operating in Manchester?
John Goodall (pictured above), WH Ireland: The work/life balance. We have all the amenities of a top European city, yet we have the Lakes, the Peak District and North Wales national parks on our doorstep.
Karan Sejpal, UBS: It used to be watching Manchester United, now it is enjoying the varied restaurant and bar scene, which has grown so much over recent years.
Bill Thomson, Brewin Dolphin: Manchester’s vibrant, diverse and exciting cultural sector combined with the optimism and drive to succeed of the city.
What are your office’s plans for the rest of 2018?
Goodall: Navigate challenging markets and continue to use our proposition to win new business.
Sejpal: We are looking to build on a strong 2017 by growing the team further.
Thomson (pictured below): To continue to look after our existing clients while also attracting new clients.
Where are you seeing investment opportunities in 2018?
Goodall: Reits. There is a valuation anomaly as highlighted by recent M&A activity in the sector.
Sejpal: Generally we are positive on Eurozone equites, emerging market equites and GBP.
Thomson: Asia Pacific and emerging market regions
