Q&A with Richard Firth, executive director and investment manager, Quilter Cheviot, Salisbury (pictured below):

What is your typical client demographic?

Our client base is so varied, based all over the country and ranging from age 10 to 95. I’d say the majority are coming up to or are in retirement. These are people who have been slowly saving or have sold their business, for example. We have charity and corporate clients as well.

What differentiates your region?

The history of the area. We are surrounded by ancient sites such as Old Sarum, Stonehenge and the New Forest. When former US president Barack Obama visited the UK, Stonehenge was at the top of his list. We are located where the sea meets the military and the West Country morphs into the Home Counties.

What challenges does your area face?

Very few. We are in a lovely part of the country with excellent links to major towns and cities in the area. Things were a little restricted during the Skripal affair, with parts of the city shut off while the chemical experts did their checks, but everything seems back to normal now. Ghastly though the incident was, it certainly put Salisbury on the map nationally and internationally.

What’s the best thing about living in your area?

Where do I start? The history, the beauty of the surrounding countryside, the people, the communications... the list is endless.

Are you bullish or bearish?

Cautiously bullish on equities which, over the long term, will continue to outperform against bonds. It has been a decent results season, especially overseas to which our asset allocation is biased.
