Q&A with Nigel Hibbert, executive director and head of Liverpool office at Quilter Cheviot (pictured below):
What is your typical client demographic?
Retired couples, who have gathered their wealth into various silos over the years with their financial adviser. We are brought in to pull together an overarching investment strategy to protect capital, deliver income, the growth of that income and consequently capital appreciation for future generations.
What differentiates your region?
Due to its diverse nature of wealth creation and multi-generational family wealth, the North West has long and prestigious links to the wealth management industry. Liverpool itself lays claim to being the largest wealth management centre outside London. World class universities and excellent schools, together with an almost unique quality of life ensures that home-grown talent has the incentives to remain in the region and provide for families through the generations.
What challenges are facing your local area?
The ‘Northern Powerhouse’ doesn’t seem to be happening. Amid all the squabbles in London, the North still has ancient infrastructure and a lack of attention from London-centric planning. Despite that, the North is a vibrant and hard-working region with enormous potential.
Bullish or bearish?
Cautiously bullish. There is still value and upside in equities. Macroeconomic worries are ever present, and while we believe volatility will increase, we don’t see interest rates rising substantially for some time. As a result, dips are buying opportunities.
What is the best thing about living in your region?
Stunning countryside, great cities, world class sporting venues and the most visited group of museums in England outside of London.
