Q&A with Jeremy Balfour-Melville (pictured) and Thomas Malloch, Co-CEOs at Malloch Melville Investment Managers, Edinburgh:
What is your typical client demographic?
Our typical MPS client probably still works and contributes to their pension, while our typical bespoke client will typically be a high net worth individual who might have run, or still runs, a business or works in finance.
What differentiates your region?
Excellent access to fund managers and company management teams without being in London.
What challenges are facing your local area?
The Disneyfication of Edinburgh and growth in Airbnb means local workers are priced out of living in the city. The SNP’s tax policies mean Scottish workers pay more income tax than English workers for doing the same amount of work.
What is the best thing about living in your region?
The region has some of the top golf courses in the world dotted along our beautiful coastline.
What is a typical saying in your region?
‘Pure dead brilliant.’
Bullish or bearish?
Cautiously bullish for the longer term now that share prices have come off their highs. It is certainly a stockpickers market at the moment, and following the recent falls, it has presented some interesting opportunities. I won’t mention the ‘B’ word as we have no clue what will end up happening. We will focus on our knitting and keep buying excellent businesses and funds for the longer term.
