Q&A with Scott Jones, divisional director, Investec Wealth & Investment, Bournemouth (pictured below):

What is your typical client demographic?

We have a whole range of clients, but for the last 20 years the Bournemouth office has worked very closely with local independent financial advisers, offering discretionary investment management to their clients.

What differentiates your region?

Bournemouth and the south coast has always had a good share of quality, family run businesses, in a variety of sectors and industries. Over the past decade, in part through the expansion and development of the university, it is also rapidly developing into a centre for technology and media companies, and has a growing and vibrant, film production sector.

What challenges does your area face?

Office space at times can be an issue, as unlike a city, we do not
have a large business district. Also, we have to work hard to ensure that we retain talent. The lure of London can be an issue, although likewise, we see a number of people in their 30s and 40s coming back to settle here.

What’s the best thing about living in your area?

Bournemouth is by the sea and is warmer than the rest of the UK (sometimes)! The coastline here is stunning and as an added bonus, behind Bournemouth lies the New Forest. What more could you ask for? It also has good access into London via rail.

What is a typical saying in your region?

As Bournemouth is a relatively new town, established in the Victorian era as a holiday resort, it is a wonderful melting pot of cultures. Dorset though is traditional farming county and has some great expressions – researching this question I loved reading that ‘God almighty’s cow’, is in fact, the humble (but beautiful) ladybird.

What is your office motto?

‘Look after your clients, as you would want your own family to be looked after.’ If you set out to do this with every client, you should not go too far wrong.

Are you bullish or bearish?

Neither. We remain cautiously optimistic on the outlook for global growth, however very mindful to the negative effects a trade war between China and the US may have on global stock markets. We are watching markets closely but have not moved portfolios to a more bearish position. With any stock market weakness, we are looking to deploy free cash.

Asset allocation of a typical balanced portfolio:
