Making a splash with Quilter Cheviot’s David Miller

Making a splash with Quilter Cheviot’s David Miller

Well done and congratulations to David Miller from Quilter Cheviot’s London office, the proud owner of three new bronze medals from the National Masters Swimming Championships in Sheffield last month.

Eleanor Mahmoud took a few moments to catch up with Miller once he was back on dry land to find out just what it is about swimming that floats his boat.

How long have you been swimming and what made you get into it?

I learnt to swim when I was three, joined a club at seven, found I was good at it and never stopped. It’s taken me all over the world.

Tell us more about the National Masters Swimming Championships

Swimmers from all over the country gather to compete with one another, divided into five age groups. There is a full Olympic programme of events from 50 meter freestyle to 1,500 meters all other strokes and individual medleys from 100 to 400 meters. The youngest competitors are 25, the oldest 80+. There are also European and World championships for the ultra-keen.

What was your highlight from the event?

Watching my team mates from Otter Swimming Club win 68 medals, including 17 Gold. Personally, it was finishing the 200 meters butterfly without drowning.

In true On the Road style, what’s the biggest parallel between swimming and investments?

On the starting block you are on your own. Ignore the background noise, it’s time to deliver – excuses become irrelevant. It is very similar to making an investment decision when markets are having a chaotic day.

What’s next in your swimming calendar? Will we be seeing you in the Serpentine on Christmas Day?

I don’t do cold water! Thinking of emulating a good friend who swam the Hellespont this summer, where Europe and Asia are separated by less than five miles.

‘Miller Corner’

Miller wrote about his swimming adventures in his recent Diary of a Fund Manager piece dated 29 Oct. Find it on Quilter Cheviot’s website.

Not only a swimmer, Miller previously joined Eleanor on a walk around London’s Hyde Park for our Walking with Wealth Managers podcast. Find it on the Wealth Manager website.
