GAM 20-year Asia equity veteran latest fund manager exit

GAM 20-year Asia equity veteran latest fund manager exit

China and Asian equity specialist Michael Lai (pictured) has become the latest high-profile name to depart GAM, according to Citywire Selector.

Lai, who joined the firm in 1998, will leave the company following a transition period.

Recent recruit Rob Mumford taking over his strategies, according to an internal memo. It is understood Lai will be leaving the funds business.

Mumford, who was hired earlier this year, is based in Hong Kong and sits within the broader EM equity team. He was most recently at MNP Advisers, which is a consultancy servicing asset managers.

Lai managed the GAM Star China Equity and GAM Star Asian Equity funds. Under his stewardship, the GAM Star China Equity fund grew to $1.5 billion in assets.

His departure comes in the wake of 13 named managers leaving the firm over the past three months, sparked by last year's suspension of absolute return boss Tim Haywood, who has also left the firm.
