Crown Court dismisses Barclays Qatar charges

The Crown Court has dismissed all charges against Barclays Plc and its parent company in relation to the money it raised from Qatar in order to avoid a rights issue in 2008.

The bench struck down ‘two offences of conspiring with certain former senior officers and employees of Barclays to commit fraud by false representations’ brought by the Serious Fraud Office.

It additionally dropped two charges of ‘offence of unlawful financial assistance contrary to section’ related to a $3 billion (£2.2 billion) loan the bank granted to the state of Qatar in late 2008.

In a statement, the bank noted: ‘The SFO is likely to seek to re-instate these charges by applying to a High Court judge to re-commence proceedings via a new indictment of the same charges’.
