A day in the life of: Hawksford's Darren Kelland

A day in the life of: Hawksford's Darren Kelland

Darren Kelland, global head of Hawksford's private client serice, Jersey runs us through his day and tells us the most rewarding part of his job.

My alarm goes off: 5:45am

I’m responsible for: The global private client service for Hawksford.

The worst part of my job: Accepting that in order to succeed, sometimes you need to fail.

The best part of my job: Nurturing talent! Seeing someone thrive and not need your guidance anymore is the most rewarding part of my job.

After work: I am a dad of three, so mostly it is spending time with them. I am also a keen cycler and cycle for at least an hour each evening (when time allows).

I got the job: I was contacted on LinkedIn by our CEO Michel van Leeuwen, and I knew that it was the right move. It was a very easy decision to make.

I’ve been in the role for: I’ve worked in the industry for over 20 years, but I have been at Hawksford for a year.

Tea vs coffee? Tea.

Typical lunch choice? When I get time, sushi.

What are you reading at the moment? The Vegetarian by Han Kang.

What is your guiltiest pleasure? Guilt is not an emotion I am familiar with…

What’s the biggest challenge you face day-to-day in your role? To stop making excuses and to just get on with what needs to be done.

How do you see the wealth management world in 10 years’ time? As a much more transparent global industry. There will be a flight to quality jurisdictions from clients wanting certainty and security. Blockchain will also play a big part and has the power to revolutionise the industry, much like the internet did.

You are hosting a dinner party this evening.  Which three people would you invite and what are you cooking? I would cook chorizo risotto, because it’s my favourite thing,

I would invite: Thom Yorke, the lead singer of Radiohead, Michael Kenna, my all-time favourite photographer and Steve Jobs, because he understood what it was to be the best

What do you get up to out of the office? Usually I run about after my kids (essentially I become a taxi driver!), but I am also a keen photographer and have a real love for film photography.

How long is your commute to work? Six minutes... the joys of living on a small island!
