John Bruton: Brexit talks must drop ‘us vs them’ tone

Brexit has been brilliant in helping the Conservative Party consolidate its position but the aggressive tone in negotiation talks will hurt both sides, says John Bruton, a former prime minister of Ireland.

Speaking at a Citywire conference in Montreux, Switzerland, Bruton, who also served as an European Union ambassador to the United States, said Brexit would prove 'exceptionally difficult to negotiate' unless both the UK and EU dropped their aggressive rhetoric and 'us versus them' mentality.

Bruton urged Theresa May and Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, to consider each other's point of view.

He also said it was vital to protect the rights of EU citizens living in the UK and Britons living in the EU.
